The RM and the RVs have been battling over the costs of maintaining the roads around the Resort Villages within the RM. The RVs have held that it’s the RM’s responsibility to maintain the roads to a safe standard, and the RM says they want to be compensated appropriately for that maintenance. The RVs formed a consortium to deal as one voice with the RM as it was voiced in a meeting by Councillor Gary Dixon that the RM had tried the “divide and conquer” route, which had been unsuccessful.
Council said they would entertain meetings with individual resort villages to continue these discussions.
At the regular RM meeting on Tuesday, Councillors said what was offered by the RVs was “a pittance,” and Councilor Arndt said the RM needed to be clear that this was “the last kick at the cat; if not you are playing by our rules.”
To deal with the condition and safety of the road until an agreement is reached, the RM decided to go down to 30 km/hr on the access roads of Island View and Pelican Point.
The council suggested setting weight limits which they said would get a reaction as it would affect septic hauling.
Councilor Labatte and Dixon felt this was not a good idea and were drastic measures. The RM said if they get more money in the agreement, they will re-instate the previous speed limit.
LMT has reached out to the Consortium and the Mayor of Pelican Point for comment.
