Given that local municipalities do not have loyal oppositions the reporting of the LMT is invaluable in promoting transparency, accountability, and character of leadership. While the larger reports are often the ones that catch the eyes I was struck by a smaller report on the discussions of the RM of McKillop and the Town of Nokomis regarding recognition of The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The contrast between the character of these two sets of leaders was stark. The Town of Nokomis chose to treat the day respectfully; the RM of McKillop chose to use the day as a butt of tone-deaf and meaningless jokes. There is much debate about the definition and existence of systemic racism. However, when the character of public officials is exposed speaking and acting with such bald-faced disrespect and mealy-mouthed thoughtlessness, about a day requiring sober reflection, it appears that no further definition or proof of existence is required. The LMT has provided transparency and exposed the character of the leadership in the RM, now some accountability is required.
