Op-Ed - Firearms License Renewal Frustrations
Frustration mounts over PAL renewal, online process, and government spending on ineffective firearm buyback programs.

Key points from this story:
- Firearms license renewed every five years
- Initial perfect score on written exam, not to brag
- PAL card virtually useless as ID
- Online renewal process frustratingly complex
- $67 million spent without buying firearms
- Government questioned on spending transparency
Once again, as I do every five years, I endured the indignity of renewing my firearms possession and acquisition license. I always remember when I first applied for one. I challenged the federal program and scored 100% on the written exam, with the RCMP sergeant telling me that the PAL could be an important piece of federal government-issued photo identification, useful for a variety of purposes. In reality, I discovered the opposite--it is entirely useless for anything except purchasing .22 shells. Take my word for it; no one accepts a PAL for anything!
