The Government of Saskatchewan continues to focus on improving the health and wellbeing of seniors. Seniors, and Rural and Remote Health Minister Lori Carr recently met with counterparts at the Federal/Provincial/Territorial (FPT) Ministers Responsible for Seniors Forum in Moncton, New Brunswick. The forum discussed issues related to seniors and ways to support them. Carr emphasized the government's commitment to supporting older adults, highlighting the productivity of working with provincial and territorial counterparts to learn from each other's initiatives.
Saskatchewan's 2024-25 Provincial Budget includes over $43 million in targeted initiatives to support seniors living within their communities. These initiatives include providing home nursing services free of charge, subsidizing supportive services through home care, reducing the cost of publicly funded long-term care, lowering ambulance costs, and capping prescription drug costs to $25 for those on the Saskatchewan Formulary and approved under Exception Drug Status.
Through Saskatchewan's Connected Care Strategy, four community health centres in Regina and Saskatoon continue to meet the needs of senior citizens. Additionally, there is a funding commitment to cover Continuous and Flash Glucose Monitoring Systems for seniors aged 65 and older with diabetes who use insulin. The government has also increased the maximum monthly benefit for the Seniors Income Plan and the Personal Care Home Benefit to further assist seniors.
The FPT Seniors Forum is an intergovernmental body that shares information, discusses emerging issues related to seniors, and collaborates on key projects. All provinces, territories, and the federal government participate in the forum. For more information, one can visit the FPT Seniors Forum website.
