With about 175 people in attendance, the Lumsden Centennial Hall filled with the sounds of laughter, music and the occasional “Prost!” greeting on Saturday, October 15, 2022.
Guests were treated to a traditional meal of sausage and sauerkraut with all the fixings - including pretzels of course! With full bellies and frothy beverages in hand, the crowd was ready to be entertained by the Regina Austrian Dance youth group. Each of the unique routines was introduced by way of an explanation of its cultural significance and historic roots and the traditionally-clad performers enthusiastically demonstrated their talent on the stage!
Later, Fire Chief Jeff Carey shared remarks about the Lumsden and District Volunteer Fire Department’s fundraising campaign and its goal to acquire a new rapid-response rescue truck. When they are called to action, time is one of the most important tools the Fire Department has. A new rescue truck will serve as the lead vehicle to quickly reach an accident or fire scene, allowing time to assess the situation and make plans for the best use of the rest of the team and equipment upon arrival. This advanced assessment approach helps the Fire Department keep its members and all individuals involved in an incident safer while delivering the actions and attention needed to resolve the situation.
To assist the Fire Department in raising the $250,000 required to purchase and properly outfit a rapid response rescue truck, Charity Armstrong, Manager of Financial Services with Conexus Credit Union was in attendance to present a check for $10,000 to Chief Carey. Combined with previously received support from the Lumsden Lions, K+S Potash Canada, SaskPower and SaskEnergy, along with proceeds raised through a variety of raffles and events hosted by the Fire Department, the generous donation from Conexus Credit Union underscores a very successful first-year in the campaign.
The remainder of the evening was dedicated to some serious fun including a cabbage tossing game, a strong arm competition, costume judging, 50/50 raffle and door prize draws, and the awarding of a round trip ticket for two anywhere WestJet flies. Watch for future events and activities hosted by the Lumsden and District Volunteer Fire Department and be sure to join in on the fun while supporting a very worthwhile community cause!
