Returning Councillor, Sandi Metz, confirmed the magnitude of the situation, “Past Councillors experienced the years of the disaster and aftermath first-hand and had to make the decisions to spend millions of dollars. They were disheartened with the previous position of the province that all our claims may not be covered. We are now extremely grateful that their review has determined our claims will be processed as a series of severe storm events that caused our community to experience further significant damages to municipal infrastructure, private residences, and provincial public utilities during 2014-2015 and that the Town will be reimbursed our eligible costs for the necessary repairs from those time periods.”
The Town of Regina Beach and the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program administrators continue to work closely together. PDAP has given the Town an extension to complete eligible project costs by the fall of 2022, which is the final resurfacing of impacted roadways. “There is no final dollar amount yet because the file is still actively under review,” said Chief Administrative Officer, Victoria MacDonald, “Council is looking forward to being able to resurface roads that were significantly impacted but we are still waiting for the reports on the approved locations and total surface area the Town will be reimbursed for. The funds received recently will likely have to go straight into paying for the road resurfacing to be completed in 2022 and the Town will actually see the final result of the PDAP funds reimbursement in 2023.”
