This week we had a second reader convey their misinterpretation of our article from October 3rd regarding LMT changing from free in your mailbox to paid request delivery.
Some people thought it was announcing that we would no longer be printing and mailing newspapers at all. This is incorrect.
I re-read the article several times to try and find this perception myself. I noticed nothing obviously wrong when reading from start to finish, other than a minor typo that seemed to imply that the reading audience is part of a coalition of news consumers.
So, beyond just being prose-blind, the problem was likely either a classic case of TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read) or the fact that we chose to highlight a pull quote that, while salient, clever, and deeply, deeply philosophical, would be confusing if read à la carte. Not unlike a google news headline, a double negative, or most of the overheard cartoon captions.
This quote was meant to draw the reader into the story, but instead may have been perceived as an early conclusion. Needly to say, though we would ultimately prefer to save trees, we plan to continue printing well into the future. All Print subscriptions include an online subscription.
