Penny completed her journey on this earth peacefully at Red Deer hospice, with family by her side on June 27 at the age of 73 years.
Predeceased by her parents Ethel & Gerry and her brother Barrie Gwillim. Penny is survived by her son Joel Gwillim (Michele) who was her pride and joy; her partner Laurie Martin; brother Gordon (Peggy); sister Glenda Gwillim; sister-in-law Barb Gwillim; many nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews; her extended Martin family; and numerous cousins and good friends.
Penny grew up on the family farm near Duval, SK, and graduated from high school at Strasbourg. She went on to U of R where she obtained a teaching certificate and later her degree. She taught in 8 different locations starting in 1969, and retired in 2006 from Leslieville, AB. Her love of teaching was a benefit to many students during those years.
Joel was the light of her life - she was a very proud and devoted Mom through all of his activities growing up, and accomplishments as an adult.
Penny and Laurie travelled western Canada in the motorhome with their dogs in tow. She made frequent trips to Texas with her siblings; and she was able to take some trips with Joel more recently, the highlight being Maui in 2019.
Penny will be remembered for many things: her sense of humour, being an avid Roughrider fan, a curling enthusiast, and keeping close tabs on the Blue Jays and Flames. She was a talented musician and loving Mom, partner, sister, aunt and friend - she will remain in our hearts forever.
A celebration of life is slated for July 30th from 2-4:30 p.m. at the community hall in Duval, SK. A come & go remembrance will be held in Innisfail, AB on July 23rd from 1-5pm at the Innisfail Library. Donations in her memory may be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society, or a charity of your choice, if you so wish.
