1933 - 2020
Reta Margaret (Kerr) Galger was born on June 14, 1933, near Bulyea, Saskatchewan. She attended school at Midway, and Southcote rural schools and graduated high school in Strasbourg. After graduation, she took a Business course in Regina and then worked for the provincial government.
On June 9, 1952, Reta married Don Galger, of Strasbourg. After a short time in Regina, they moved 4 miles southwest of Strasbourg, where they farmed and raised their family. Reta was a typical farm wife planting huge gardens, raising chickens, milking cows, picking berries and then canning and processing everything possible. She sewed clothes for her family as well as doll clothes, diapers, beach bags, quilts, grad dresses, bridesmaid dresses and even a wedding dress. As her grandchildren started to arrive, she got busy crocheting each of them an afghan.
Reta was very active in church life at St. John. She sang in the choir, directed the junior choir and was an organist for many years. Long before the days of the computer, she would offer her assistance if the pastors needed any typing done in the office. Reta was a very proud member of the gospel group Spirit Led. She travelled with them for several years and enjoyed sharing the hostess duties at their concerts with Eileen Schulz.
Caring for her family was Reta’s greatest joy. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family gatherings and treasured the times she could spend with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Don & Reta moved into Strasbourg in 1995 to their home on Main Street and then in 2009 to their suite in the Centennial Manor. Reta was able to live on her own until her health began to fail in December of 2019. On January 3, 2020, she became a resident of the Nokomis Health Center, where she passed away peacefully on February 13, 2020.
Reta was predeceased by Don, her husband of 60 years, her parents Cecil & Mary Kerr, brothers Bob & Melvyn Kerr, sister Audrey Keil and brother in law Harold Keil; and Don’s family – Adam & Lydia Galger, Walter & Irene Galger and Laura Erlander. Reta leaves to cherish her memory her children: Brian (Barb), Brenda (Lloyd) Small, Lori (Warren) Wild, and Glen (April), 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, her sisters in law Bertha and Mabel Kerr, brother in law Tim Erlander and numerous nieces and nephews.
