The Southey Communiplex Inc. is fundraising to build locker room facilities for females and non-binary people in the community. The current facilities have only one dressing room for girls/non-binary but it lacks washrooms and showers. It also functions as a storage room. The Communiplex is fundraising to add on two more dressing rooms to the building which would be complete with a shower and washroom facility.
“We are excited to announce that Sherwood Coop is the first major donor of this initiative with their generous donation of $10,000.00. We have a lot of fundraising ahead of us as we have a lofty goal, but we know it is achievable, especially now with this amazing support from Sherwood Co-op”, says Chelsea Manz, volunteer fundraising coordinator for the Communiplex. “Our female and non-binary players deserve a space of their own complete with bathrooms and showers. Just like any of the other teams and players.”
The Sherwood Co-op donation to the Southey Communiplex allows the community to continue to encourage females/non-binary to play hockey, grow the game, live healthy lifestyles and it encourages these kids to never give up on something they love.
When I think of a small town in Saskatchewan, I think of the local rink and the local Co-op”
says Megan Dunn, community engagement manager with Sherwood Co-op. “Sherwood Co-op knows how important a rink is to the community of Southey, its families and especially its children. We want to be supportive of the renovations and are excited to make this donation to the Southey Communiplex.”
Some of the U9 Marlins Girls team were in attendance to accept the donation and the girls are eager to continue to play hockey for the Southey Marlins and look forward to having a dedicated space for the team.
