The Government of Saskatchewan is developing a new student assessment program guided by the Provincial Education Plan (PEP). Education Minister Everett Hindley emphasized the program's goal of providing foundational skills and knowledge to help students succeed. The assessment aims to offer a fair and objective measure of student performance, helping to guide instruction and improve student achievement.

The program will be implemented in a staggered approach beginning in the 2025-26 school year. Grade 5 and 9 students will participate in annual mathematics assessments, while Grades 4, 7, and 10 students will undergo English language arts assessments. The ministry will collaborate with PEP partners to develop the assessment approach, including exploring a common approach to reading.

Learning and assessment is one of four key priorities in the Provincial Education Plan, alongside Indigenous education, mental health and wellbeing, and student transitions. The plan was developed through collaboration with the education sector, Indigenous organizations, post-secondary institutions, and parent representatives. Saskatchewan will join other Canadian provinces in implementing a province-specific assessment program tailored to its curriculum.
